Den's Dental Blog

Hello! My name is Den. This blog is going to cover a range of dental topics. I am not a dentist or a dental nurse but I have recently undergone a lot of dental treatment. This treatment has given me a great insight into the world of dentistry and I would like to share everything I have learnt with you here. Last year, I developed terrible pain in my mouth. I was diagnosed with severe tooth decay. The dentist removed the problem teeth and then inserted false ones in their place. He also whitened my teeth to improve my smile. I hope you find my blog useful.

Tips to Making Trips to the Dentist Easier For Your Kids

by Myrtle Banks

Trips to the dentist are pertinent if you anticipate your kids growing healthy teeth. However, this can turn out to be a stressful time considering that most children will associate fear and pain with these medical professionals. Since oral hygiene is paramount, getting over this fear should be a priority. This will avoid having every single dental visit being a stressful occasion not only for your child, but also to you as their guardian.

Here are some handy tips that can make trips to the dentist easier for your children.

Begin early

The sooner your kids have their first trip to the dentist, the better. This gives them a chance to get used to the idea that this will be a regular occurrence. In addition to this, they become familiar with the dental practice and it can become a dental haven of some sorts. You can schedule their first visit as soon as their debut tooth emerges. Not much can be done during this visit but they get a chance to be acquainted with the family dentist in good time.

Avoid negative words

Whether we realize it or not, most people will use negative words in association with dental visits. Do not use "pain", or "hurt" when explaining to your child the need for dental visits. This will make them scared and alarmed any time the subject is broached. You need to introduce positive language, which will aid in positively reinforcing the image that your children grow up with in regards to dentists. For instance, keep using positive words such as "strong", "healthy", "clean" and so on to make them see that a trip to the dentist is more beneficial than not.

Play pretend

Most kids like to play pretend. You can use this to your advantage before you take your child for their first scheduled appointment. Play the dentist and have your child come in for their appointment. You can then proceed to count their teeth and have them join in naming the numbers. Take a mirror and show them how a dentist would look at their teeth. You can even have your child role-play with their dolls or teddy bears. The whole point is to make them as comfortable as possible with the thought of dental visits, as well as make them understand that these are routine procedures that need to be done.

Do not take them along for your own dental visits

Kids are sensitive to their parents' emotions. You may be trying to show them how brave you are but more often than not, they will be able to tune into any anxiety that you have.
