Den's Dental Blog

Hello! My name is Den. This blog is going to cover a range of dental topics. I am not a dentist or a dental nurse but I have recently undergone a lot of dental treatment. This treatment has given me a great insight into the world of dentistry and I would like to share everything I have learnt with you here. Last year, I developed terrible pain in my mouth. I was diagnosed with severe tooth decay. The dentist removed the problem teeth and then inserted false ones in their place. He also whitened my teeth to improve my smile. I hope you find my blog useful.

Things Cosmetic Dentists Can Do For You

by Myrtle Banks

Cosmetic dentistry has become one of the most popular types of dentistry that people are opting for, so if you are thinking about beautifying your smile, here are some of the procedures that a cosmetic dentist can offer you.

Whitening -- One of the most common types of procedures that cosmetic dentists offer is teeth whitening. This is typically done in two ways: in-office whitening or take-home whitening. With the in-office whitening treatment, a cosmetic dentist will direct a laser light on your teeth after applying whitening gel. The laser light accelerates the function of the whitening gel, and after about three treatments, which takes an hour or so, you will typically see a significant whitening of your teeth. The take-home whitening treatment involves you applying whitening gel to a custom-made dental tray which fits over your teeth, and wearing the tray for about 20 minutes every night. Unlike the in-office treatment, the take-home treatment takes several weeks before you will see results. But the take-home treatment is much less expensive than the take-home whitening treatment.

Veneers/Caps -- Cosmetic dentists are also able to give you veneers or caps, which are thin porcelain layers of material that are ideal for filling in chips, cracks and breaks in your teeth. Veneers are made from an impression that a cosmetic dentist takes from your mouth, and they are shaded to match the existing colour of your teeth. However, in some instances, veneers are also used as a whitening device if only one or two of your teeth are discolored due to an injury or some type of staining that only affected several teeth. In those instances, the veneers are shaded to match your other non-stained teeth, so that you achieve a harmonious smile.

Implants -- When one of your teeth has been extracted, and you need a new tooth, a cosmetic dentist can insert an implant. An implant is typically made from titanium, which doesn't leak into your bloodstream the same way as mercury does, and is one of the most durable metals in the world. Implants look like small rods, and a dentist will insert them into the bone of your jaw to form an anchor around which the bone will grow. Once the implant has been inserted, it takes about four or five months for the bone to grow around it. After that process is completed, a cosmetic dentist will take an impression of your mouth and make a crown, which is an artificial porcelain tooth that is placed on top of the implant, replacing your missing tooth and forming a permanent bond with your gum.
