Den's Dental Blog

Hello! My name is Den. This blog is going to cover a range of dental topics. I am not a dentist or a dental nurse but I have recently undergone a lot of dental treatment. This treatment has given me a great insight into the world of dentistry and I would like to share everything I have learnt with you here. Last year, I developed terrible pain in my mouth. I was diagnosed with severe tooth decay. The dentist removed the problem teeth and then inserted false ones in their place. He also whitened my teeth to improve my smile. I hope you find my blog useful.

What You Should Know About Clear Braces

by Myrtle Banks

If you have misaligned teeth, gaps between your teeth, or jaw alignment issues, you might be thinking about orthodontic treatment. Among the different types of braces you can get are clear braces, also called ceramic braces. Here are some things to know about them to decide if they are a good option for you.

They Are Less Visible Than Metal Braces

One of the top reasons people choose clear braces is the fact that they are less noticeable. You will still have metal wires between the ceramic brackets, but the brackets themselves are made to match the colour of your teeth. They are not actually clear, but are custom-made to blend in well with your teeth, making them less noticeable from a distance. They can help you feel more confident while also getting the necessary orthodontic treatment.

Clear Braces Are Just As Effective As Traditional

While these brackets are made from ceramic instead of metal, they are still just as effective. You should have about the same length of treatment as other types of braces. However, you do need to be careful about not damaging them. Ceramic can be a little easier to crack than metal, so make sure you follow your dentist's instructions when it comes to how to care for them and what you can and can't eat with the braces. If you do this, you will have straight teeth and your jaw issues fixed by the end of treatment.

You Need to Be Careful About Discolouration

While clear, ceramic braces are an excellent option when you need orthodontic treatment but don't like the appearance of shiny metal, there are a few disadvantages. One of them is the fact that the ceramic might become discoloured over time. If you have them for a few years, you might find that the ceramic becomes a darker colour than your natural teeth before treatment is up. The best way to prevent this is by taking good care of your oral hygiene, avoiding drinking or eating anything with dark colours, and visiting your dentist on a regular basis.

Ceramic Can Be More Expensive

Another disadvantage to ceramic braces is that they can be more expensive than traditional braces. You are not only paying for the orthodontic treatment, but also for the ceramic material and to have them custom made to match your teeth shade. This requires more work, thus increasing the cost of treatment. Since they are not deemed necessary, they might not be covered by your dental insurance company like traditional metal braces are.
