Den's Dental Blog

Hello! My name is Den. This blog is going to cover a range of dental topics. I am not a dentist or a dental nurse but I have recently undergone a lot of dental treatment. This treatment has given me a great insight into the world of dentistry and I would like to share everything I have learnt with you here. Last year, I developed terrible pain in my mouth. I was diagnosed with severe tooth decay. The dentist removed the problem teeth and then inserted false ones in their place. He also whitened my teeth to improve my smile. I hope you find my blog useful.

3 Ways to Determine Whether You Are Eligible for a Tooth Implant

by Myrtle Banks

Dental implants offer a permanent solution for dealing with missing teeth. The procedure involves various stages. The first step is getting an assessment to determine if you are a suitable patient for the procedure. The dentist checks your gums' and jawbones' condition and overall health to determine if you can successfully hold a dental implant.

The dental expert will only proceed to the second stage when they are sure your body can handle the process of installing dental implants, and you are responsible enough to take care of your mouth after the surgery. Here are three simple questions to help you determine if you are an eligible candidate for a tooth implant.

1. Are Your Jawbones Healthy?

The first thing to consider before thinking of installing an implant is your jawbone's condition. Often, most people lose their permanent tooth and stay without one for a while. The absence of the tooth and its accompanying pressure leads to the bone losing most of its density. If the density is too low, the implant will not have the support needed, and it might fail. Similarly, if you have gum disease and other related issues, the implant can cause a gum infection. That's why expert dentists assess the mouth to determine what measures to take to prepare your jaw and gums for the implantation process.

2. Are You Committed to Proper Dental Hygiene Practices?

The second factor that determines whether you will have successful dental implantation is how well you follow proper dental hygiene practices. An implant takes between three and eight months to heal. The duration of the recovery depends on how well you care for your mouth during this time.

You should learn and maintain healthy oral hygiene routines before getting the implant. That's because developing proper hygiene habits before the procedure makes it easier to maintain the dental implants after surgery.

3. Do You Have Chronic Diseases?

The other consideration to make is whether you have chronic conditions that might interfere with the healing process. For example, it is risky for people with conditions like diabetes to get wounded as their wounds take time to heal. It is helpful to inform the dentist about your condition beforehand to determine if it is safe to continue with the implantation procedure.

Take the time to understand the conditions that could ruin your chances of getting dental implants. Apart from the simple assessments listed above, you'll also need a professional dental exam. That way, the professionals can let you know if you can continue with the surgery.
